Things You Should Never Put Down the Drain

Drains are primarily for water and liquids. Putting other items down your drain can lead to blocked drains and a plumbing emergency! To save you time, money, and hassle there are some things that should never go down a drain.

Fertiliser

Fertiliser is designed for your garden. Always use your fertliser correctly and do not hose the garden down until the fertiliser has been left for the proper amount of time for it to seep into the garden. If you hose too soon it can end up blocking your stormwater drain. If you have excess fertiliser or garden chemicals, always dispose of them through a chemical dumping facility. Your council can advise you of your nearest depot.

 Expandable Foods and Flour

Some foods such as flour, bread, and pasta are designed to expand when water is added. Putting these down the drain will quickly clog up your system. To avoid the need to call in plumbing services never put these foods down the drain!

Oils

Although there will be obviously residue from cooking oils, soaps, and kitchen fats when washing up, dispose of what you can with your normal rubbish. Many oils will solidify in the drain and can quickly block it up. If any oils do go down the drain run some very hot water through the drain straight afterwards to ensure that the oil doesn’t se. This will wash it through the pipes as quickly as possible.

 Toiletries

Toilets are for human waste. Baby wipes, nappies and sanitary products should never be flushed down the toilet in any circumstances. Doing so can block up your toilet so that it overflows and cannot be used – a plumbing emergency of the worst kind! Always put any baby products and sanitary products in the bin to save you from having a blocked up toilet and needing to call a plumber in a hurry.
